William C Smith

William Clyde Smith (‘Smitty') passed away on January 1, 2020 at Ebeid Hospice In Sylvania. William was born April 7, 1923 to Louis and Myrtle (Fitzpatrick) Smith In Collingwood, Tennessee. One of eleven children Clyde was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He entered the Army in January, 1943 at 19 years old. He served as a Rifle Marksman with his tour of duty carrying him to Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes Rhineland, and England. He was discharged in November of 1945. While in service to his country Clyde received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, and an American Theatre Service Medal.

In December, 1946 he made his way to Toledo, Ohio where he worked various jobs ultimately leading to Champion Spark Plug where he retired after 30 proud years of employment. While working at Champion, he met the love of his life Vera Mae (Troxel) Smith. They were married for 55 years until her passing in 2006. Clyde & Vera had 2 children, William Larry Smith and Debbie Ann (‘Shug') (Barry) Smith. Clyde loved restoring old cars and attending car shows, having received many trophies and awards for his hobby. He loved to play cards with friends at the American Legion Post and with his grandkids (they always thought he counted cards!). Oh the laughter! He enjoyed upholstery work as a hobby as well. Clyde played pool, bowled on a Ma and Pa League, loved horses, country music and the Mulberryette Marching Unit. He and Vera loved to travel, taking trips to Hawaii, out West, & regularly to Waynesboro, Tennessee. His most beloved trip was taking his Model A replica to Waynesboro, Tennessee and back. He was grandfather to nine: Shane (Rachael) Smith, Amie Smith, Clint Smith, Guy Smith (Rebeca Hernandez), Krissy (Chris) Powlesland, Jamie Wilkes, Freddie Wilkes, Mellissa McCoulagh, and Deanna McCoulagh,. He was a great grandfather of eleven: Samira, Willa G, Guy William, Valentine, Franki, Cash, Seth, Sophie, Aaliyah, Emilia, and Briella. Countless special times were spent going to the circus, having Sunday dinners, attending horse shows and many other events and activities he was involved in. His smile and gentle ways tell the story of his life. He was a true Southern gentleman. Always there to tell great stories of working in the sawmills, running cars, and the many adventures of his younger years. He was preceded in death by his wife Vera, father Louis, mother Myrtle, brothers Louis (‘Daddy Hog'), Cecil, Walter, Maynard (‘Mossy'), sisters Ruby, Pearl, and Jewel. Clyde is survived by his sister Mary Nell and countless nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Debbie at Ebeid Hospice.
