Michael J. Gorny, age 71 of South Toledo, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family at his bedside on October 25, 2025. Michael was born on September 11, 1954, in Toledo, Ohio, to Ronald and Rita (Dembowski) Gorny. Michael was a proud graduate of St. John's High School and attended the Scott Park Campus within the University of Toledo.
Michael dedicated over 21 years of service to the City of Toledo in several departments, but most notably within the youth athletic department, where he shared his deep love for coaching and athletics. Michael showed this passion through coaching his children in a variety of sports, specifically leading his baseball team nearly all the way to the Little League World Series. Along with coaching, Michael was also one of the original members of the Toledo Silver Streaks wheelchair basketball team and once completed a full marathon.
Michael was a lifelong Notre Dame football fanatic, which began as a tradition passed down from his father. Michael's love for the "Fighting Irish" was infectious and has been passed down through his children, grandchildren, and other family and friends. Above all else, Michael wanted to be remembered as a loving Father and Dzia - mission accomplished.
Michael is survived by his wife, Maria (Plewa) Gorny; his children, Christie (Doug) Freytag, Andrea Young (Gar), and Shawn (Amy) Gorny; his brother, Rick (Donna) Gorny; his sister, Paulie (John) Gray; and his grandchildren, Hannah (Mason), Zachary, Sarah, Hunter, Nicholas, Emma, Ariana, Leah, Mayah, Isabella, Felix, and Tessa.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home, 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd. (at Byrne Road) on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 2-7 p.m., with a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home on Saturday, November 1, 202,5, at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Catholic Church. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery. The family suggests memorials in Michael's name to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or H.O.O.V.E.S.
