Joseph George Saloom died Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the Darlington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Toledo, after a brief illness. He was 82. Joseph was born January 1, 1928, in Bloudan, Syria, the first child of George and Alice Saloom. In 1947, he moved to Toledo, where he was employed as a welder. He was an avid swimmer and body builder and won several body building competitions through his affiliation with the old downtown YMCA. Joseph was a talented singer, dancer and musician, and loved to perform Arabic songs at family gatherings, where he was the life of the party. In the early 1950s, Joseph served as a chanter at the old St. Elias Orthodox Church at Mulberry and Huron streets. In the Mid-1950s, Joseph married Louise Emrod of Zanesville, Ohio, where he lived until 2000, when he moved to the Darlington Center. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Surviving are his sister, Manzar (Shafic) Khoury of Toledo, brother, Ameen (Mary) Saloom of Dayton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. today at Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd., at Byrne Road, (419) 382-3456. Funeral services will follow at St. George Antiochian Christian Catherdal, 3754 Woodley Rd., with Rev. Fr Basil Koory officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery Zanesville, Ohio.
