Robert Momsen of South Toledo died at St. Luke's Hospital Tuesday, May 25, 2010. He would have turned 81 Friday, May 28th. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Tony Momsen, brothers Don, Ray, Tony Jr., and sister Doris Flick. Bob was a 1947 graduate of Libbey HS and received a BS from OSU in 1950. He earned a Master of Education from UT. Bob was a TPS teacher and coach for 30 years and VP of the Toledo Federation of Teachers. He taught at Libbey, Waite and Macomber. Bob was married to his loving wife Lois (Leffel) Momsen for 61 years. She survives along with his daughters: Judy (Nick) Cuomo Bonita Springs FL, Jenny (Jerry) Lagger Sylvania, Jan (Dave) Burkhardt Toledo. Grandchildren; Brad (Truc) Lagger Woodbridge VA, Phil (Mary) Lagger Sylvania, Jesse (Patty) Momsen Dayton, Larry and Jessica Burkhardt. Great-grandchildren; Isabel and Jeremiah Momsen. Bob was known for his love of family, friends, football, and fishing. He was a member of the church council and a Sunday school teacher at Peace Lutheran Church for many years. Bob's many accomplishments and awards included: Being named First Team All-American defensive guard for OSU in 1950. He played professional football for the Detroit Lions, earning 2nd Team All-Pro honors in 1951. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers. In 1954 a buckeye tree was planted in his honor at the OSU Buckeye Grove. In 1986 he was inducted into the Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame; In 1994 the Libbey HS Hall of Fame; In 1997 Bob was awarded the Ralph Davenport Mershon distinguished OSU Alumni Award; In 2005 Bob was inducted into the OSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Bob was President and Board member of the OSU Alumni Club of Lucas County. In 1990 the club established the OSU Robert Momsen Scholarship Fund. Bob was awarded numerous salesmanship awards while an insurance agent for the Franklin Life and Jackson National Insurance Companies. In 1979 Bob and his wife Lois retired to Devil's Lake, Addison MI, where Bob was an avid fisherman, President and Board member of the Lakes Preservation League, and with Lois Charter Members of The Lutheran Church of the Lakes. They returned to South Toledo in 2007 and have been attending Bethel Lutheran Church for worship. The family extends its thanks to the staff of St. Luke's Hospital, especially the doctors and nurses in the ICC for their care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1853 South Ave, Toledo on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Pastor Jon Bell and Pastor Bernie Philabaum will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Momsen Scholarship Fund of The OSU Alumni Club of Lucas County or a charity of the donor's choosing.
