Raymond F. 'Dippy' Dipierro

DIPIERRO Raymond F. "Dippy" Ray DiPierro, age 87, passed away on July 20, 2014. Ray was born in Toledo, Ohio to Ralph and Myrtle (Cronenberger) DiPierro on August 22, 1926. He attended Libbey High School where he graduated as a member of the National Honor Society and later was inducted into their Football Hall of Fame, as well as the the National Italian American Sports and Toledo City Athletic League Halls of Fame. After graduation in 1944, he was recruited by Ohio State coach Paul Brown to attend The Ohio State University. Ray played on the undefeated 1944 Buckeye team winning a letter and his "gold pants" as a Freshman guard. In 1945 he enlisted in the Army Air Force and upon completion of service, he returned to OSU in 1946, 47, 48 and went on to win three more Varsity "O" awards. He graduated from the OSU College of Education. In 1949, Ray signed a contract to play for the Chicago Beers and then finished his professional NFL career for the next two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Ray and his family are avid football fans and attended many OSU and Packer games. Ray enjoyed the closeness he maintained with his family and was a very happy and proud grandfather. After Ray's professional football career, he entered into his father's wholesale produce business, later working in sales for Inland Container and Toledo Memorial Park retiring in 1997. Ray is survived by his high school sweetheart, Joyce Allison and their three children, daughters Kim DiPierro, Lynn DiPierro, son Scott (Cindy) DiPierro and his grandsons Joey and Nick DiPierro. Ray also leaves behind his dear friend Katie Walsh. Ray's family would like to thank all of his compassionate and loving caregivers. Visitation will be held at Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home, 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, Ohio 43614 on Friday, July 25 from 2-8 pm with a private service on Saturday. Entombment will be at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society, Heartland Hospice or donor's choice.
