Mary A (Szczesniak) Balas Mary A (Szczesniak) Balas, of South Toledo passed away March 13, 2014 in her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 20, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio and was the daughter of John and Mary (Hudak) Novak. Mary was a member of St. Hedwig's church for over 50 years. She was married to John Szczesniak who preceded her in death in 1961. Mary then married Frank Balas in 1965 and he preceded her in death in 1992. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Kenney, Agnes Olson, Frances Hurlburt and Margaret Rothbaum, brothers, Arthur Novak, John Novak. Mary is survived by her children, James (Marcie) Szczesniak, Donald (Joann) Szczesniak, stepson, Frank Balazs, surviving are five grandchildren, Michelle (Karl) Reisig, James P Szczesniak, Lori (Brian) Murphy, Donny and Toni Szczesniak, and four great grandchildren, Jon, Kristie, Lexie and Myles, Her brother Larry (Carolyn) Novak and sister, Rita Zinn. Mary retired from Libbey Glass and was a member of the Golden Emblem Club and Libbey Retires. She was also a member of the Catholic Slovak Ladies association. She enjoyed baking and was famous for her Kolacky and nut rolls she enjoyed helping out with the church festivals and even was a winner nurmous times. Busy wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother she will be sadly missed by her family. Now is a member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church presently. She enjoyed tremendously traveling and taking vacations, playing cards and canning, enjoyed helping her daughter in law with many yard sales, Mary loved to sew and was an avid reader. The family will receive friends at the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd at Byrne Rd Monday March 17, 2014 4-8 P.M. with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home on Tuesday March 18, at 9:15 a.m. follow by the mass of Christian burial at St Hyacinth Church Parkside Blvd and Victory Ave at 10:30 A.M.
