Helen Faye Bensch

Helen Peek-Bensch, 68, passed away in her home Monday, October 9, 2023. She was born November 27, 1954, in Toledo, OH, to John Peek and Violet Fitzpatrick. A proud graduate of Libbey High School, Helen devoted her life to caring for animals.


Helen Served as the Executive Director of animal shelters in Alpena, MI, and Columbia City, IN. Prior to retiring, she was the Director of The Toledo Animal Shelter for 15 years.


In Alpena, she enjoyed bowling and received the distinction of being the first female to bowl a 300- game. Helen and her friends loved creating outrageous scavenger hunts known as Road Rallys. Upon returning to Toledo, Helen developed a love for scrapbooking, gardening, and getting together with her "Cowboy" classmates.


Helen is survived by her sons, Chris (Sheila) Potter and Tim (Wendy) Potter. She leaves behind her grandchildren Tyler Potter, Stephan (Alex) Potter, Reegan Potter, Kameron Potter, Brendon Potter, and her great-granddaughter Jenny Potter; sisters Sherry Johnson, Janie Perry, Donna Granados, Tina (Andy) Kirk, and Lisa (Steve) Mason; brothers Mike Peek, Marshall (Dawn) Fitzpatrick, and Randy (Grace) Peek;

and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: stepfather Robert Fitzpatrick; sisters Leona Peek and Tammy Morris; and brother John Peek.


In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations are asked to consider the Seagate Food Bank. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
