Elizabeth Rice 'Libby' Sido

Obituary for Elizabeth (Libby) R. Sido Acc#023270 Run Sunday December 2, 2012 W/ Picture From Charles M. Scott Jr. Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home Elizabeth (Libby) R. Sido, formerly of Sylvania, OH, died November 27, 2012, at Flower Hospital. She was 92. Libby was born August 17, 1920, to C. Clyde Rice and Miriam Mayes Rice of Effingham, IL. She enjoyed drama and band in high school and continued to play flute at DePauw University. It was in freshman chemistry class that she met Gregor Sido. Libby moved to St. Louis, MO, to study at the Washington University School of Medical Technology. She worked as a Certified Medical Technologist at Barnes Hospital. Greg soon followed to attend St. Louis University Medical School. They were married December 18, 1944, and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. They moved to Toledo, OH, from El Reno, OK, in 1949. While Greg built his family practice, Libby established them as involved and contributing citizens and lovingly managed their growing family. She was the consummate wife and mother, volunteering as Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, preparing nutritious and delicious nightly meals, putting thousands of miles on the family station wagon driving to and from music lessons, swim team, orthodontist appointments, and annual trips to visit family in Effingham. Every summer, the family took a trip planned by Libby to include U.S. history and varied geography, ranging from Maine to British Columbia. Libby was generous with her time serving her community. She was a founding member of Mobile Meals and volunteered for more than 30 years. She organized and served as the first president of the Indian Trail Garden Club. In 1976, she was asked by the president of Flower Hospital to reorganize and lead the Flower Hospital Auxiliary. She was a Life Member of the Auxiliary and served as president in 1977. Libby was also a long time member of the Toledo Academy of Medicine Auxiliary. As a member of Epworth United Methodist Church from 1949 to the present, she served in numerous capacities: organizing dinners, luncheons, and bazaars; and helped with planning and interior design of the Sanctuary when the church relocated. She and Greg were Cotillion Club members. Libby loved flowers and was especially fond of Oriental lilies. She and Greg visited gardens throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her hobbies included travel, music, knitting and needlepoint, and bridge. She was an excellent cook and hostess and belonged to several gourmet groups. Libby and Greg moved to Swan Creek Retirement Village in 2005. There, Libby made new friends among residents and staff that enriched her final years. Libby was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, C. Oren and Marcus J. Rice. She is survived by her children: Anne Germana (Chuck), Parma, OH; Martha Nordstrom (Tom), Monroe, MI; Amy Stallfus (Michael), Suwanee, GA; and Philip G. Sido (Becky), Pequannock, NJ; 13 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Libby's family would like to thank all of her doctors, especially Dr. Jeanine Huttner and Flower Family Practice and the staff of Flower Hospital's 5th and 8th Floors. Per Libby's wishes, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to: Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valleyview Dr., Toledo, OH, 43617, or Life Care Commitment at Swan Creek Retirement Village, 5916 Cresthaven Ln., Toledo, OH, 43614.
